Revitalization of the Frick Park Red Clay Courts

July 2007
  • Survey of tennis players interested in playing on clay.

  • New Website:
    www.clayfricktennis.org

  • Getting Used and Donated Tools.

  • Volunteer Work on courts 1 and 2:
    * Removing weeds by hand, without using any chemicals or pesticides.
    * Dragging and leveling the clay surface.
    * Cleaning the dirt and small stones from the surface.
    * Collecting reusable red clay.

August 2007
  • Volunteer Work on courts 3 and 4:
    * Taking out weeds.
    * Dragging and leveling.
    * Cleaning the dirt off the surface.
    * Collecting reusable red clay.

  • Procuring and signup of donors and sponsors.

  • Proposal to city to purchase and install lines, and paint net posts.

  • Club Purchasing and installing new lines for 4 clay courts.

September 2007
  • Online invitation for player member signups.

  • Club organized clinics:
    * First Club Organized Clinic held on Sept. 9, 2007.

  • Hosting the September 13 Clay Court reopening party:
    * Around 100 local tennis enthusiasts attended.
    * Free tennis clinics were held on the 4 revitalized courts.
    * Local tennis pros donated their time to support the club.

  • Collaborating with Citiparks with 87th Annual the Paul G. Sullivan tournament Sept 15-23:
    * Participation increased threefold from 2006, with over 60 players for the year 2007.

October 2007
  • Organizing player leagues.

  • Installing signs and promoting clay court rules.

  • Designing and constructing red clay drag mats.

  • Collecting acorns and leaves in collaboration with park.

  • Cleaning and leveling courts 5 and 6.

  • 1st Club Member Tournament (click here for more information).

  • Ongoing preparation of surface in courts 5 and 6 for next year.

  • Presenting revitalization work by club to city officials:
    * Participation in ARAD 2008 Budget Public Hearings on Oct. 29.
    * First meeting with Pittsburgh Parks and Recreation on Nov. 16.

  • Seeking clay court maintenance agreement with city.

  • Selection of Initial Board of Directors.

  • Incorporation of club as a non-profit in the state of Pennsylvania.

  • Recognition of volunteers and supporters during 2007.
